From my perspective, the song is to an ex girlfriend, and the singer is talking about finding someone new. And he looks back at all the time he wasted, the summers they made it, with his ex, and how she's so insecure and wanting to be like the paper dreams (girls in magazines). He feels like that was pointless. She's all about telling him off and pouring her heart out, but she isn't willing to really make the effort. So he's singing her a song about how he loves this new girl because she is okay with just being. She's herself and she's different, she's not a paper dream and she doesn't try to be. She moves in her own way, and she's caring and sincere and lays down for her cause, so to speak. Because its important and she cares enough to come to his show just to hear about his day even for a second.
